Farmers Livestock Exchange began in 1946 when nine acres were purchased from the DeHaven family in Winchester, Virginia.
Plans called for a 20,000-square-foot building with a main sale ring, holding pens, loading facilities, and office space. Despite opposition from neighboring landowners, the directors pressed forward under the guidance of the first president, George Eagle.
From the beginning, FLE committed to remaining farmer owned and operated.
The exchange opened its doors with a sale on October 13, 1947, under manager French See. Across the decades, the livestock market has maintained its commitment to farmers. Today, the sale is managed by Scott Stickley.
